Msimango Hails Sundowns Stars

Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango has hailed the presence and experience of Mamelodi Sundowns’ contingent of Ronwen Willaims, Themba Zwane, Teboho Mokoena and Mothobi Mvala in the Bafana Bafana camp.

Msimango made a last-minute report to camp after being called up following the forced withdrawal of Sundowns defender Grant Kekana due to a hamstring injury he picked up during the Nedbank Cup final defeat against Orlando Pirates last Saturday.

South Africa take on Zimbabwe in an all-important 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday evening, and Msimango made special mention of the Sundowns players, as well as the rest of the squad who possess leadership qualities contributing to how impressive the team has performed of late.

“Yes, of course having a player like Ronwen’s stature in the team is very important,” the Chiefs man said to reporters.

“Him, together with the other captains. The leaders in the team – your Percy Tau’s, your Mshishi’s and Teboho Mokoena. [Mothobi] Mvala.

“A lot of the other guys contribute to the success of the team and I think having players of that magnitude with that much experience in terms of African football does help the team perform the way it’s performing.

“And for me to be part of this group, also you know helps me learn a lot. Helps me you know grow my game as well and just picking out the bits and pieces that I can and adding onto what I can improve on as an individual so, to answer your question, they’ve been fantastic like you’ve seen with the performances as well.

“It shows, so yeah I’m very proud to be proud of such a team.”

The 27-year-old centre-back also took a joke out of how the call transpired, while enjoying some time off with his better half.

“I was very excited to be honest. When I was called up I was on a vacation with my wife. And yeah, I got the news that I (chuckles) needed to report for camp [because] there’s been an injury to Grant [Kekana].

“And I was very happy. It did not matter the circumstances of the call-up to be honest, but for me was just to be part of the group. To learn, and to grow like I’ve mentioned and you know to be part of the experience and the journey that I’ve been through.

“I was more than happy to drop everything to come back, and represent my country.”
