Nigeria defender Frank Onyeka has remained hopeful to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the Super Eagles indifferent form in the qualifiers so far.
Bafana Bafana are currently leading Group C in the World Cup qualifiers with 13 points from six games, while the Super Eagles – who were seen as favourites in the group – only have seven points.
But with four games left to play and a direct clash with Hugo Broos’ men, Onyeka has remained positive about his side’s chances.
“Anything is possible,” he said when asked by iDiski Times about Nigeria’s chances during a Bundesliga media visit in Germany.
“It’s four games, if we win the four games it will put us in a very good position.”
Onyeka, who is known as ‘Frank the tank’ in his home country, is currently on loan at Bundesliga side FC Augsburg from Brentford and was one of Nigeria’s key performers at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, helping his side to reach the final.
He has made 29 appearances for his country, but admitted the players need to look at themselves over their up-and-down form in the World Cup qualifiers where they have won only one of the six games so far.
“It can be various reasons,” he replied when asked about the surprise results.
“We have so many good players. As a player we need to look into ourselves, we know we can do better in order to qualify for the next World Cup.
“This is the biggest tournament, every player wants to be there. We need to do everything to be there, because after that I don’t know if I’ll get another chance.”
The World Cup qualifiers continue in September, when Nigeria will first host Rwanda before facing Bafana Bafana in South Africa.
