Bafana Bafana and Al Ahly star Percy Tau has hailed the potential on Cassius Maulila but played down the comparisons between the two.
Mailula who recently turned 22 has broken into the Bafana set-up this year after a breakthrough campaign at senior level with Masandawana.
The academy product who appeared to have seen his career stagnated over the past two seasons burst onto the scene when Peter Shalulile was ruled out through injury for a sports hernia and he want on to score 15 goals across all competitions.
“I was loaned,” Tau said when asked by iDiski Times about the similarities with Cassius Mailula’s sudden rise.
While the comment was perhaps tongue in cheek as he noted he went down to the National First Division, Mailula had been featuring in the third tier with their affiliate club M Tigers before his first-team breakthrough.
“I think he’s playing for Sundowns and playing as a striker, already [that tells you something] I just don’t know whether he is left or right footed! But nah he’s a good boy, we only wish him the best and hopefully, he will grow.
“But my path will never be the same as anyone else, and others’ paths will never be the same as mine, so he will write his own story.”
Mailula, who has been linked with a move to Europe in recent months directly contributed to 19 goals (15 goals and four assists) in 31 games as they won the DStv Premiership and reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.
