Who Are Bafana Opponents, Andorra?

Bafana Bafana take on European minnows Andorra in the newly-established FIFA Friendlies Series on Thursday evening, but who are the nation ranked 164th by FIFA?

Andorra is the fifth-smallest of any UEFA countries and have had very little success over the years, winning just 13 matches since being recognised by FIFA and playing their first official match 1996.

The total population of Andorra, just over 81,000 would easily fit into the FNB Stadium. Andorra is a microstate, neighboring France and Spain in the Iberian Peninsula.

Andorra are nicknamed “The Tricolours” and the players are predominatly amateurs, because the domestic Andorra league, which was formed in 1995, is only part-time.

Bafana’s opponents have only won 13 games so far, seven official competitive fixtures and six friendly matches. A 1-0 win over St. Kitts and Nevis was their first-ever win against a non-European team on 25 March 2022. Three days later, Andorra defeated another non-European side with another 1–0 win at home to Grenada. 

Andorra last won a match in September 2022 and have since gone 13 games without a win, losing 10 of those.

Andorra’s overall squad value is €3.28 million (R67 million), as per Transfermarkt, in comparison to Bafana’s €20.4 million (R417 million).

Head coach Koldo Alvarez has been in the hotseat since 2 February 2010. His first win came after seven years, in a 2-0 over San Marino in his 49th game in charge. His overall record reads: 116 games, 10 wins, 17 draws and 89 defeats with a goal difference of 41-246.
