Williams Reveals Defining Moment Of AFCON QF Victory

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams says the biggest moment of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final win over Cape Verde was not his penalty heroics.

Williams, 32, made history by becoming the first goalkeeper in the history of AFCON to save four penalties in a single shootout, before Saturday evening, no penalty was saved in the two previous shootouts in this edition of the tournament.

But when asked how he felt about the last-minute save to Gilson Tavares, which proved kept South Africa in the game, as he went in one-on-one with the experienced goalkeeper, ‘Ronza’ admitted it was the best moment, for him, personally.

“That was key, it was probably the biggest moment in the 90 minutes, there weren’t too many clear-cut chances and that was one they got behind our defence and I think it was five minutes to go,” Williams said when asked by iDiski Times about the 90th-minute save.

“That save stands out more than anything else today – I’m just proud I could keep my team in the game because they don’t give me so much work to do, and when my time comes, I need to show up and I’m just glad I could show my worth today when called upon.”

Williams has now kept four consecutive clean sheets for Bafana en route the the semi-final against Nigeria on Wednesday.
