Banyana Dominate COSAFA Team Of The Tournament Despite Final Loss

Despite their 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship cup final heartbreak, Banyana Banyana dominate the team of the tournament with five players, with two of them also winning individual accolades.

The youthful Banyana side were looking to add a record sixth COSAFA title having won it five times before, but the ‘drought’ unfortunately continued since they last won it in 2021.

Maud Khumalo’s second string side went down 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout against Zambia after the match had ended 0-0 in regulation and extra-time.

Despite the setback, the hosts can be very proud of this year’s achievement after failing to make it beyond the group stages in last year’s edition.

Jessica Williams, Ntando Phahla, Asanda Hadebe, Isabella Ludwig, and Kesha Hendricks all made the cut for the Best 11 squad of the now concluded tournament. The rest of the team is completed by Namibia’s Zenatha Coleman, Nobukhosi Ncube from Zimbabwe and four players from Zambia in Ochumba Lubandji, Fridah Mukoma, Evarine Katongo and Pauline Zulu. Their coach, Florence Nkatja was also named in the best team.

South African shotstopper Williams, who conceded just two goals the entire tournament and scored a goal in the 3-0 win over Eswatini, was named the Golden Glove winner while crowd favourite Ludwig was voted as Player of the Tournament.
