Ellis Highlights What Banyana Needs To Work On

Banyana Banyana head coach Dr Desiree Ellis says there are a couple of areas the team needs to work on ahead of their second international friendly against Jamaica on Tuesday.

South Africa lost 3-0 in the first friendly against the Reggae Girls over the weekend, stretching their winless streak to three matches in their continuous preparations for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

With nine new players in camp, Ellis emphasized the need to give everyone selected a chance to play and be tested at this level, adding that they are looking to do better in the final third decision-making at the Catherine Hall Stadium.

“I think one of the things we sort of discussed was our decision-making in the final third,” Ellis told Safa.net.

“I think we created a few get out of the press out of our build-up and the last runs upfront. Not a lot of movement for us to create those opportunities and also when we get into those areas, we don’t become intentional to either shoot.

“We rather pass the ball to someone, and we are in areas where we can shoot and then we make a different decision, so a lot of decision making.

“We had a good session last night talking about all of those things and also what we need to do better when we are on the ball. The movement off the ball needs to be a little bit concentrated at the back as well. And I thought we defended really well at times.

“In certain situations, we could have done better and those are some of the things we spoke about.”
