Are Pirates Coaches Under Pressure? Almenara Responds…

Orlando Pirates coach Sergio Almenara says they are not willing to think about pressure from outside after Kaizer Chiefs drew level on points with them in the DStv Premiership.

In the build-up to the Soweto Derby, there were contrasting emotions from the respective fan bases, with Pirates bagging the MTN8 already in Jose Riveiro’s debut season and what’s perceived as tactical and technical progression under the coaching staff.

But Chiefs supporters, or rather sections of the fan base, were calling for Zwane to be sacked – which Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Junior pointed out as misleading and fine margins between Chiefs ‘failure’ and Pirates’ success.

And after Amakhosi completed a historic double, and five straight league wins over the Sea Robbers – iDiski Times posed a question to Almenara, if they would now be concerned over the Ghost turning their back on them.

“Well we cannot be in the minds of other people, we have enough work in the week with our players, I don’t think we can do anything about that,” he said in response, before sending a message to the supporters.

“It’s painful for the fans, we understand that it’s painful for the players, it’s painful for us, the only thing we can do is move on and try to prepare very well in the week in order to face Swallows.

“We are thinking week by week, we are not trying to overcome these mental difficulties, hopefully only today, and then we [start] preparing for the next game, that’s all.”

The Buccaneers face Swallows in the league for another cross-town rivalry, at Dobsonville Stadium on Friday (19h30).
