Kaizer Chiefs coach Khalil Ben Youssef says the enforced second half changes were due to fatigue and admits the desired impact was not there from the substitutes.
Ethan Chislett on his debut, was taken off after 70 minutes alongside Ashley du Preez, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Flavio da Silva for Thabo Cele, Wandile Duba, Mduduzi Shabalala, and Mfundo Vilakazi.
This was after Stellenbosch winger Langelihle Phili had cancelled out Silva first half opener – but there was no change in momentum for the home side, as Stellies went on to find a late winner through a stunner from Devin Titus.
“The substitutions were so clear, the first Thabo Cele for Mshini, Shabalala for Ethan – you know they were not part of the team for a long time, they can’t finish the 90 minutes, so for that it was the change for them,” he said.
“Silva did a lot of work in the first half and was tired so for that we made a substitution, and Du Preez, same case as Mshini and Ethan…
“There’s no right or wrong substitution, but the player [performance] makes it right or wrong, you expect something, if they performed well, they make it right, if it’s not good, it means it’s not right… After the game everyone can analyse it, but I think we managed it well.
“There wasn’t the best performances from the bench, we have to see, watch and make the right analysis about why there wasn’t a good performance.”
Chiefs missed the chance to go five points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns – with a game in hand but now turn their attentions to the Soweto Derby – where they host Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
