Former Orlando Pirates assistant Sergio Almenara has revealed the reasons behind his surprise decision to leave the Buccaneers.
Almenara, 44, joined the Sea Robbers alongside Jose Riveiro ahead of the 2022/23 and has been a crucial member of the Spaniard’s technical team that led Pirates to back-to-back MTN8 and Nedbank Cup titles.
However, on Monday – just two days after Saturday’s 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns – Pirates announced Almenara’s departure, which comes as a surprise to many fans and neutrals.

The Spanish coach has cited family reasons behind his decision. “This is a decision I took with a heavy heart,” Almenara told the club.
“I have really enjoyed my stay here, but unfortunately, due to personal matters that the club is aware of, I can no longer continue with my job. I have a young family back in Finland. They have been unable to integrate into the country. I would have wished to stay longer, but unfortunately, it’s not possible.
“I would like to thank management, the technical team, players, and most importantly the fans for my stay. I will always remain a Buccaneer.”
Almenara has worked alongside Riveiro since January 2019 – when Riveiro took over FC Inter, where they stayed until December 2021.
