Cardoso Explains Emotional Outburst After Downs Winner

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso explained his emotional outburst after his side scored the winning goal against Magesi FC in the league in Polokwane on Wednesday evening.

The newcomers scored early inside the opening 12 minutes with the defending champions levelling after an hour and netting the winner in the last five minutes of the league encounter at the old Peter Mokaba stadium. Cardoso sprung along with his technical team and players to go celebrate Tashreeq Mathews’ winning goal. The victory meant Sundowns stay at the summit of the table with 33 points in 12 matches while the Limpopo side remained rooted at the foot of the table with eight points in 14 outings.

Cardoso says his players had to fight mentally after conceding and knowing what Dikwena tṧa meetse have done to them in the past in the Carling Knockout Cup final. The former Esperance de Tunis mentor also admitted that it was a tough game that’s why he was overcome with emotions.

“Yeah, obviously a very emotional game and naturally emotions for myself came out on that moment,” Cardoso answered iDiski Times about his celebration.

“We expected to make a strong first half. We discussed it a lot emotions and what could come out from this game and that we should enter very strong in order to make ourselves the first goal.

“But it happened we lost concentration in the action that gave the goal to Magesi. And then I think, on the heads of the players, the players came back something that was on the past that we should not attach ourselves to the past, we should look forward.

“So first half was difficult the players struggled to put themselves inside the game in the best way.

“But also we knew that if you could keep the intensity, we had players to put inside that could give energy that could bring other things that could put challenges to the other team. And eventually, we also didn’t need to think about two goals.

“I always tell them think about one because if we score one, the energy will be very big on our side. And hopefully we did it.

“It seems that also we scored the second one that was not validated, but it’s not important. We have the energy, the strength, the character to go until the end.

“I confess to you, as a coach, it was a very tough, tough game, not only because we had to think a lot in terms of how to add the players, because it’s basically our job as coaches to head how we can ourselves, try to solve the problem that was in the pitch and they gave a good answer.

“By the way, we changed the game. The players that entered helped a lot and we kept the intensity until the end and thank God we received the result we wanted.”
