Sundowns Stage Come Back Against Magesi

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns came from a goal down to defeat Magesi FC 2-1 in the Betway Premiership at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium .

It was the home side who drew blood first through Wonderboy Makhubu in the 12th minute while Lucas Ribeiro levelled for Sundowns with a stunner in the 64th minute and Tashreeq Mathews grabbed the winner in the 85th minute.

The opening five minutes did not produce any chances at goal for both sides as they were both settling. It was in the eighth minute when Teboho Mokoena tried to create magic finding Iqraam Rayners in the box but the latter’s decision making let me him down. There was an unsuccessful attempt from Peter Shalulile in the 11th minute.

The home team launched a counter from that with Kakora setting up Makhubu who broke the deadlocked a minute later.  With Sundowns on the back foot Mokoena found Shalulile to try to level but Lehlohonolo Mokone was there to make a clearance.

Deolin Mekoa could have made it 2-0 with his strike from range if it didn’t go wide and Makhubu too after taking the ball from Malibongwe Khoza however could not beat Dennis Onyango to extend his side’s lead in the 36th minute.

Mokoena wasted two more chances in the half shooting from range, so did Ribeiro from distance as well leaving the side trailing at the break.

Sundowns made a double substitution at the start of the second half with Arthur Sales replacing Sphelele Mkhulise and Tashreeq Mathews coming on for Rayners. The changes almost brought on an impact as Mathews took a shot at Elvis Chipezeze five minutes into the stanza but the Magesi captain denied him the equaliser.

Six minutes later Mcedi Vandala aimed at Onyango who produced a good block to deny Magesi a second goal. The visitors kept pushing and were finally rewarded four minutes after the hour mark with the Ribeiro goal.

Sundowns could have secured a victory if Shalulile’s header inside the last 10 minutes of the game wasn’t flagged offside. Their persistence, though, paid off again as Matthews beat Chipezeze from the right to secure victory.

The Brazilians remain at the top on the log with 33 points from 12 matches, while Dikwena tṧa meetse stayed at the bottom with eight points in 13 games.
