Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has praised the collective efforts in the club since his arrival that has culminated with a nomination for the Betway Premiership Coach of the Season award.
Cardoso arrived at Sundowns to succeed Manqoba Mngqithi in December 2024, and oversaw 34 games in all competitions, steering Sundowns to their eighth consecutive league title and the CAF Champions League final.
While they fell at the final hurdle against Pyramids, and in the Nedbank Cup semi-final to eventual winners, Kaizer Chiefs, his run of 18 wins, one draw and two defeats saw them break the goal scoring record, even in a campaign where only 28 games were played.
“The nomination is the recognition of all the coaching staff, the level of adaptation, that we arrived, showed to the South African reality, and ultimately also the consequence the work of the players, the dedication to the proposals that we put in,” Cardoso said.
“I see it as a joint consequence, as I saw the monthly awards I received in this season, it’s a result of the joint work, done in the club, that led to results, and ultimately the coach is the face of the results.
“But I share the individual awards with a big team of people, and group of people that is behind, since the moment the players joined the club – and the scouting process, until the moment they are developed by the coaches.
“The way they are supported by the fitness coaches, medical department and all the people in other departments, supports the work of us [as an entire technical team].”
Cardoso will now be aiming to build on his first season with the club with his first pre-season and off-season transfer window, ahead of the 2025/26 season.
The annual PSL awards are scheduled to take place on 29 July, where Cardoso will be vying about Jose Riveiro and Steve Barker for the individual accolade.
