Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shared insight in the postponement of their opening match against Marumo Gallants while thanking the league and Gallants for allowing for the rearrangement.
Sundowns were due host Bahlabane Ba Ntwa in their opening match of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign in Pretoria on Saturday.
However the match has been moved to 18 August as Cardoso’s side wrap up their pre-season camp in Europe after they had to delay preparations for the new term after the passing of midfielder Jayden Adams who was only laid to rest this past weekend.
Cardoso’s pre-recorded message was played at the official launch of the season where expressed gratitude to the parties involved and how his side wants to honour Adams through all the season.
“We would like, obviously, to congratulate and say thank you very much for the PSL, for the Marumo Gallants that just allowed us to delay our first championship match,” said Cardoso on SuperSport TV.
“Unfortunately, the reasons are not the best ones. We also want everybody to remember the memory of Jayden Adams and how we are mourning him, but at the same time, how we are living from the love that he brought to all of us.
“And it’s also our obligation, obviously, to honour him throughout all the tournaments, we are pretty happy about the game being almost there.
“First one, we wish you all the best in the weekend for all the games. Let’s hope we have all games, and let’s hope we all enjoy throughout all the season.”
