Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has revealed that Sibongiseni Mthethwa picked up an ankle injury in training that might rule him out of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Mthethwa, 29, has made seven appearances for Amakhosi since joining the club from Stellenbosch FC but was a surprise absentee in their last win over Richards Bay.
After the match, Johnson explained that the strong midfielder picked up an injury in training that could see him sidelined for a while.
“Ox had an injury injury at training,” he told reporters.
“He hurt his ankle, freak of an accident and we sent him for X-rays and things like that. He came back and according to the medical team, he has to stay out for a little bit.
“Whether he’ll back for AFCON or our next game, I cannot say.”
Johnson also discussed the fitness status of the rest of the squad, saying several players are close to full recovery George Matlou will only be able to play after the AFCON break again.
“Other than that we have Tiki who’s just had the operation on his on his shoulder and he’s out recovery. We also have Aiden McCarthy, who also had a hernia operation, but he’s also out recovering.
“And back is everybody. I think Keegan is almost, he’s probably 99.9% ready to play. Today, you see now I tried Ash a little bit, just so that we could see whether he has it is.
“I haven’t spoken to him yet but it looks like he’s come through. I think he came 15 minutes. He’s come through that. So hopefully, he’s okay for the next game.
“Zita, same day that Ox got injured, someone trapped on his toe. He’s alright, he is coming. How far the toe is, it’s not a major thing but we took precaution with Zita.
“Matlou had a knee knock two weeks ago and that hasn’t recovered yet. So he’s also 50/50 but George probably not make the next game.”
