Chiefs Retire Fleurs’ Shirt Number

Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has announced that the club will retire Luke Fleurs’ shirt number 26 after his tragic passing.

Fleurs was killed on Wednesday in a hijacking, news that shocked the football fraternity, and everyone at Chiefs in particular.

The former Ubuntu and SuperSport United defender had only joined Chiefs last year, and was still to make his debut for the club.

Fleurs had racked up 70 appearances for the Matsatsantsa, scoring twice, after joining the club from Ubuntu FC in July 2018.

Despite yet to make his official debut for the club, Chiefs will retire his jersey number, Motaung Jr. announced at the player’s memorial service at FNB Stadium on Thursday.

“Our new normal the last couple of days or since last week when we come to the village we look at the empty seat where he’d sit in our change room, in our technical center before our team meetings, in the meal room which we call Taung and of course in the corridors at the village,” Motaung Jr. said during the memorial service.

“So in his honour and to ensure he’s not forgotten our Executive chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung has agreed that we will retire Luke’s jersey number 26, this doesn’t happen often but as a fallen soldier the entire institution believes it’s the right thing to do.

“And we want to ensure that his legacy is with us forever. Even those that come after us will know there was a Luke Fleurs who wore jersey number 26 for Kaizer Chiefs football club.”
