Kaizer Chiefs succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Spanish LaLiga outfit Elche CF in their final pre-season match played at Pinatar Arena on Saturday night.

Amakhosi wasted a glorious chance to take the lead early on after Thabiso Monyane’s cross found Flavio Da Silva who failed to connect with the header as the ball sailed across the face of goal.

Chiefs fell behind in the 22nd minute with Ali Houary going on a solo effort before firing a low shot which found its way past Brandon Petersen to make it 1-0.

Things went from bad to worse as Chiefs conceded the second goal on the stroke of halftime as Umaru Konare Tounkara reacted the quickest to head home from close range with the Spaniards taking a comfortable 2-0 cushion into the break.

The second period saw the Glamour Boys reduce the deficit in the 58th minute.

Lebohang Maboe intercepted the Elche midfield and outran their defence before squaring the ball for Asanele Velebayi who tapped in from close range to pull one back. Velebayi netted his second goal of pre-season after also scoring in their 1-1 draw against Al Kholood.

Elche were awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute, but Petersen made a great save to keep the score respectable.

Despite efforts to try and find the equaliser, Elche’s stood firm to see out the result.
