City To Name Interim Coaches?

After the departure of Eric Tinkler, Cape Town City look set to name interim coaches for their upcoming Betway Premiership fixtures against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

City confirmed Tinkler’s departure on Tuesday, ending a three-year stint with John Comitis’ club.

It was Tinkler’s second tenure as City coach, having first been in charge between 2016 and 2017.

The club have only had three coaches in their nine-year existence – Tinkler, Benni McCarthy and Dutchman Jan Olde Riekerink.

iDiski Times understands that assistants Lebogang Manyama and Diogo Peral could be asked to take over in the interim until a new head coach is confirmed, and are expected to lead City against Chiefs on Sunday.

Manyama is of course a former Chiefs player, while Peral also has links to Amakhosi, having played in their youth setup.

With Tinkler’s job already in jeopardy for a few months, City have been linked with a few coaches in recent months, including Bradley Carnell and Muhsin Ertugral.

Carnell has been on the market since his departure from St Louis City in the United States in mid-2024, and late last year iDiski Times reported that Carnell and the club had been in communication.

Ertugral, who lives in the Western Cape, has also been available since leaving his role as Technical Advisor for the Turkish national team.

In 2016 Ertugral had been expected to be City’s first coach, before his sudden appointment at Orlando Pirates, which led to Tinkler becoming City’s first-ever coach.

There had been speculation that Ertugral could consider a Technical Director role at the club in the future, and the 65-year-old could also be an interim option.
