Chippa United have opted to replace Morgan Mammila as head coach with Kurt Lentjies, who is taking over as interim coach until the end of 2022/23, while Mammila moved into an admin role at the club.
Mammila replaced Daine Klate earlier in the campaign and started his reign with four wins on the trot. However, he’s only picked up one more victory in the following 10 league games.
As a consequence, the Chilly Boys have dropped down the league table and are now just sitting three points above the relegation/promotion playoff spot, level on 24 points with Swallows.
Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to the Dube Birds was the second loss to Swallows under Mammila and he had indicated after the match that he would step aside if he fails to beat AmaZulu next week.
However, it seems chairman Chippa Mpengesi now took the decision of his close friends’ shoulders and opted to relieve him of his head coach duties, with Lentjies once again returning to the dugout as interim coach.
This publication has learned that Mammila has again been moved to an administrative role at the club, while Lentjies will guide the side in an interim role until the end of the season.
The former player was already in charge of the training session on Monday morning, as the club prepare for their next DStv Premiership fixture against AmaZulu.
It’s the second time that Lentjies takes over as interim coach after guiding the club to safety last term when Gavin Hunt was initially placed on “special leave” before departing permanently.
