Hlungwani Assesses Letlapa Red For Vilakazi Tackle

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has applauded Akhona Makalima for her bravery in issuing a red card in the match between Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United at the weekend.

Babina Noko were reduced to 10 men in the 84th minute when Vuyo Letlapa was given his marching orders for a lounging tackle from behind on youngster Mfundo Vilakazi when the referee had stopped play because of remonstration between both sides.

The Glamour Boys took numerical advantage as ‘Obrigado’ charged toward the Sekhukhune defence before powering a low shot past Badri Sangare to hand Amakhosi a narrow 1-0 victory.

Dissecting the incident on SABC’s Soccerzone, Hlungwani, gave his props to referee Makalima for taking a brave and correct decision.

“Now, what does Vuyo Letlapa do with Mfundo? Mfundo try and go through him but the game has stopped,” ‘The Principal’ said.

“If you do something when the ref has stopped play, the referee is going to punish you for violent conduct.

“You will see there when Letlapa kicks Mfundo, so when he kicks him, in terms of the law, we call it violent conduct.

“The player must be sent off because the game is out of play, the ball is out of play.

“So, therefore here you will see when he kicks him there the ball is out of play. So, this is straight red card.

“So, communication between referee and assistant was spot on for her [Makalima] to come to a credible decision.
