SuperSport United striker Abubeker Nasir has dismissed claims that he went “awol” at the club, saying his absence was due to injury and a misunderstanding.
Nasir, 24, joined Matsatsantsa on a season-long deal from Mamelodi Sundowns in an attempt to revive his career.
The Ethiopia international star joined Sundowns from Ethiopia Coffee where he emerged as one of the most sought-after talents in African football but had endured an injury-ravaged stay at Masandawana since.
He is yet to feature for SuperSport and now made headlines for allegedly going absent without leave in the new year – claims he has now dismissed via his social media.
“There is an information circulating on social media regarding my current status with SuperSport. To be honest there were a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding with the club,” he stated.

“After a recent injury during a friendly game on the 5th of Jan 2025, I was told to rest by the club’s physician to recover since the injury is not substantial, which I did. Later I received a message through my agent about my absenteeism.
“I then communicated the club about the situation and apologise for the incident.”
