Former Premier Soccer League referee Victor Hlungwani says the match officials in the Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns game made a mistake by sending off Amakhosi’s iPad.
There was commotion on the sidelines after Sundowns’ second goal, which came from a contentious offside decision in the build-up.
Chiefs’ bench were seen remonstrating with the officials on the sidelines after reviewing the incident on their iPad, which resulted in match referee Sikhumbuso Gasa showing the technical advise the red card.
However, Hlungwani, who believes the actual non-offside call was the right decision, explained that a technical team member from Nasreddine Nabi instead of the iPad should’ve been sent off.
“We saw a gadget given a red card,” he said on Soccerzone.
“Now, what does the law say? The law says gadgets are allowed. But this gadget was given a red card. I don’t know why.
“But the law says ‘the use of any form of electronic communication equipment is permitted in the game to be used by the technical officials. However, a team official who uses unauthorised equipment or he behaves inappropriately as a result of this equipment must be sent off’.
“Here the wrong equipment was sent off – [the iPad] instead of the coach or whoever is using it. Someone should’ve been sent off, not the equipment.
“Incorrect application of the laws game by the match officials.”
