SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt is delighted to have captured the signing of defender Keegan Allan after he was released by Moroka Swallows.
Allan was released by the cash-strapped Dube Birds, who could not fulfill their two matches against Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows in December last year due to the clash between players and management over non-payment at the club.
The tough defender was not included in the 22 players that were released by Swallows a few weeks ago, but his deal was terminated last week. His move to SuperSport was confirmed by his agent Mike Makaab on Gagasi FM Sport yesterday and the Pretoria giants club has since confirmed as well.
“It’s good to have a solid player like Keegan in the mix,” said Hunt.
“He knows the club well and will provide valuable depth for us at a time when our injury list and suspensions were leaving us too thin at the back.”
The former Mamelodi Sundowns youth product, who joined the Dube Birds at the beginning of last season, featured in 21 matches last term as the Soweto giants finished inside the top eight.
In all, Allan made 31 appearances for the club, scoring two goals.
SuperSport needs depth and cover, especially at the back after Thulani Hlatshwayo picked an ankle injury that has ruled him out for some time, as they are involved in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Hunt, in the absence of the former Bafana Bafana captain, has selected two youngsters – Ime Okon and Bilal Baloyi.
Okon, when the season starts, will miss the two matches after he was sent off against Richards Bay at King Zwelithini Stadium on 30 December.
It means Allan’s service will be required immediately when they host Sekhukhune United on 13 February.
The 22-year-old strong defender, who was part of the Bafana Bafana B side that claimed the bronze medal in the COSAFA Cup in July last year, can’t wait to get started.
“An incredible privilege to be representing this massive club and brand,” said Allan, who walked out at Sundowns as lack of senior opportunities were minute.
“I am very thankful and excited to be playing under the coach and his technical team and to play with this group of players. When the time is right, I, The Lord, will make it happen.”
