Hunt – We Will Lose Next Big Talent

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt is resigned at the prospect of losing emerging talent Shandre Campbell and suggests they will be prepared for it.

Campbell, 18, has been one of the standout young talents in South African football this season after winning their Young Footballer of the Season and DStv Diski Challenge Golden Boot award in their triumphant 2022/23 campaign.

He walked into the first team as the replacement for Thapelo Maseko, who made a big-money move to Mamelodi Sundowns as the likes of Ronwen Williams, Sipho Mbule, Teboho Mokoena, Grant Kekana and Aubrey Modiba have done in recent campaigns.

Oratilwe Moloisane, 16, has been showing signs of becoming the next player to break into the first team, ironically in the same position as Campbell and Maseko.

“Well Campbell is going to be bought now again, isn’t it? So I have to have another one, it will be three [left wingers] in three years,” he said when asked about the emerging talent in the DDC squad.

“So yes it’s a problem. I don’t know, I don’t want to get into this conversation. We have to try and look at our conveyor belt all the time because of our situation because players are going to move all the time.

“It’s very frustrating as a coach because you can never build anything so it’s very difficult but that’s the business we in and that’s what it is – but I agree with you, he’s a big talent and he’s the next one [into the first-team].

“There’s a few more coming, we have to [promote more youngsters into the senior team].”

The teenager has scored two goals with four assists in 16 games across all competitions this season.
