SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has insisted Pitso Mosimane deserves a lot of credit how he turned Mamelodi Sundowns into a winning machine after several foreign coaches failed to do so before him.
Mosimane took over at Chloorkop in 2012 and won every trophy there is on offer domestically, while also guiding them to their first ever CAF Champions League in 2016 and a CAF Super Cup.
Mosimane followed the likes of Johan Neesken, Antonio Lopez, Hristo Stoichkov and Henri Michel who all failed to lift any silverware – and Hunt has now insisted ‘Jingles’ should be given credit for how he turned the club around, admitting his big advantage was that he knew local players.
“One thing about Pitso, with all those foreign coaches, he did brilliantly,” Hunt explained on the TIFA podcast.
“Because he stood his ground, and he got his way, and he got players in that he wanted.
“With a lot of the foreign coaches, when they came in – I’m not saying they were bad coaches, they were brilliant coaches, good pedigree, great CV – but I don’t think they knew the market where to get players.
“But Pitso, he changed everything at Sundowns. He said ‘hey, we don’t need this type of player’. Because they were getting players that didn’t fit.
“They had got good players at the club but he said ‘I want him, him, that type of player’. And they reaped the success of that.
“You’ve got to give Pitso a lot of credit, a lot of credit. He changed [the club] and obviously he said no to somebody there at the hierarchy.”
