Johnson Makes Strong Soweto Derby Claim

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson believes the side’s new coach Nasreddine Nabi should be able to handle the pressure of the Soweto Derby as he has been part of bigger duels on the continent.

The Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Chiefs is the biggest fixture on the South African football calendar and one of the biggest derbies in Africa just not as big as the Kariakoo derby in Johnson’s opinion.

Johnson, who spoke to IDiski Times writer Matshelane MamaboloNabi, believes Nabi will not feel the the pressure of his first Soweto Derby too much because he has tasted the hostility and the high pressure in East Africa when he was in charge of Young Africans.

“Simba versus Yanga, those are derbies, my friend,” Johnson told iDiski Times.

“There’s no in-between and unfortunately here at home, I don’t think the derby is as big as it used to be and thus there’s not a lot of pressure like in the past. We have encouraged our people to be together in the stadium, this is the only derby where we [opposing fans] sit together.”
