Johnson On Fans Love/Hate Relationship With Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has addressed their supporters’ love/hate relationship with the club during their indifferent run of results.

With two wins in 13 games across all competitions in 2024, Chiefs find themselves battling for a top-eight spot in the remaining two games of the DStv Premiership season.

This season has not been short of Amakhosi fans showing their disdain for the poor run of results, which has seen the club in search of their fifth head coach in four years.

“There’s always love and hate between Chiefs and their supporters but I think there’s more love because you can’t please every one of the 16 million [fans], so I think as far as the season is concerned with us now, completing, we want to get the last two games on a positive note,” Johnson said.

“I think the love will end off on a good note and then you know what it’s like, you break up with your wife but you always have to come back home, you have to apologise, so in one moment, we’ll do our best for the last two games, that’s our biggest concentration. We know how our fans feel about winning and losing.”

The Soweto giants take on Polokwane City this weekend at FNB Stadium, who are in ninth place but could rise about them in the table with a win.

“I’ve said this many times this season, all games played at Kaizer Chiefs are pressure games and we have to always put our best foot forward,” Johnson said.

“We’ve been trying, the last game and the game before that, we ended up having a draw even though we had many opportunities to score the goals. But we came back to the drawing board and worked as hard as we could with the players’ mentality to control the ball and put it in the back of the net.

“So yes, tomorrow is no different, we play, eight and nine, which is always a cup final and tomorrow will just be more… not pressure but for us to come out and really take the three points, it’s our home game and FNB belongs to Kaizer Chiefs.”

The two sides meet on Saturday in what will be Chiefs’ final home game of the season at 15h00.
