Kaizer Chiefs caretaker coach Cavin Johnson has rated the performance of young striker Wandile Duba after his cameo off the bench in Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Moroka Swallows.
Duba, 19, replaced Ranga Chivaviro after 56 minutes but – much like the rest of the squad – had a tough outing after Chiefs were reduced to 10 men following the red card of Edmilson Dove in the 47th minute.
Johnson, though, believes the youngster had a good game and helped to create some scoring opportunities for Christian Saile and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.
“If we had maybe the extra men, maybe you would have seen Wandile in a better performance,” he said after the goalless draw.
“But yes, I thought Wandile has done well.
“Tonight, he came on and defended from the front. But at the same time, he also made some good moves.
“I think he made one or two that was really telling, that if everybody else read that move, maybe someone else would have scored because he didn’t go on to score goals, he just went on to [add] value the game.
“And when you look at the the opportunity to Saile gets, and the opportunity Mshini gets, you see what Wandile is doing then you realise what he did.
“So I thought Mshini could’ve gone a little bit closer and then he could’ve turned and then caught on the second ball.
“And the one where he moves the way Saile gets, I think if Saile holds the ball, anything else can happen.”
Chiefs remained in sixth place, three points behind rivals Orlando Pirates in fourth spot – with the Soweto giants facing each other next weekend. But first, Chiefs host struggling Golden Arrows, who have lost 10 games in a row, at FNB Stadium on Tuesday.
