IDiski TV analysts Junior Khanye and Benedict Tso Vilakazi have expressed contrasting views regarding Relebohile Mofokeng going overseas.
The Orlando Pirates teen sensation has enjoyed a good season that culminated in two cups triumphs – The MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, nominations for the PSL end-of-season awards and earned himself a senior national team call-up, eventually making his debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe.
Last year, the midfielder went on trial at English side Wolverhampton Wanderers and this season he has been linked with interests from Spain and Scotland among other countries. Bafana-Bafana coach Hugo Broos has warned that it’s too early for the youngster to move abroad, saying the player should at least spend another campaign at home before considering leaving.
Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Khanye however believes there is nothing as too early, making comparisons with Mofokeng’s age mates from other countries.
“I mean if this boy Endrick from Brazil at the age of 17, 18, signed for Madrid from a Brazilian club, if he could be signed at 16, why can’t Mofokeng at the age of 19 go overseas?” said Khanye on iDiski TV.
“Endrick went to Spain to play for one of the best teams in the world, let the boy [Mofokeng] go, there is nothing wrong.
“If he stays in South Africa he will follow in the footsteps of so many players who could not go abroad because of politics. They ended up being superstars just in the DStv Premiership and they could play around the world but didn’t because of politics.
“So the boy must go because it is going to benefit him and the country as well.”
Meanwhile, former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Tso says for him it’s good for the player to move abroad, however he shouldn’t just move for the sake of moving and should pick the leagues carefully.
“It depends how we put it,” said Tso on iDiski TV.
“Because if we say he must go overseas, one it depends where he is going overseas like which side.
“Sometimes he might be going to Scandinavia where his football, the one that we are enjoying, is also going to be limited based on the style of play in that country whether Sweden or Denmark or whatever the case may be.
“It’s important to ask where overseas, is it Spain, Portugal or Belgium? Where must he go where he will get a coach that will use his talent very well?
“If we say just overseas it might be Denmark or Russia where he will play two-touch and it becomes difficult for him to express himself like how we are seeing him do now.”
