Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has urged the squad to maintain their intensity and concentration after the Amakhosi extended their winning run to four games with a commanding 2-0 victory over TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Chiefs controlled key moments of the match and finished their chances with efficiency, with TS Galaxy unable to break through a disciplined Amakhosi defence.
Lilepo sealed the result late on, calmly finishing into an empty net after the Galaxy goalkeeper was caught out of position. The result continues an impressive turnaround in form for the Soweto giants, who had endured a difficult run of results earlier in the season.
Victories over Durban City, Magezi and Orbit College had already lifted them to third place with 39 points from 21 games AfricaPicks before Sunday’s win pushed their momentum further.
Kaze was quick to emphasise that there is no room for complacency within the camp.
“We need to keep pressure, pressure on everyone, in training, out training to recover well, sleep early and pull in the same direction, the message must be consistent, we can’t relax, we need to be better everyday, concentrate in every training session, it’s the only thing that will keep us in a good space,” he said.
The Belgian-born midfielder also credited the return of key players from injury as a significant factor behind the club’s resurgence, noting that the increased competition for places is pushing the entire squad to higher levels.
“We couldn’t keep the same line up [during that bad run], the players who were injured who are back are creating more competition, Mayo, Ox, Ethan, Given, Bradley are all back, having more choices makes the team better in all ways,” Kaze said.
Chiefs made use of their squad depth on Sunday, with Ethan Chislett among those introduced from the bench during the game.
The win opens up a gap over the chasing sides in the race for CAF Confederation Cup qualification, with Chiefs firmly in the mix for a top-three finish as the season enters its final stretch.
