Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Cedric Kaze has outlined the team’s progress since last season, highlighting the main area of improvement while also identifying specific remaining weaknesses.
Kaze was speaking at Naturena on Monday with the team gearing up for the next Betway Premiership clash against Siwelele on Wednesday evening at FNB Stadium.
The Burundian coach noted that Amakhosi have improved their defence this season, pointing to the fact that they are conceding far fewer goals than they did last season.
Now what remains as one of their struggles is lack of goals. Kaze believes the team must first improve the players’ confidence and awareness in the final third. He stressed that while they have been creating many chances, they have been struggling to convert them.
“Last season, we were a team that was leaking goals all the time,” said Kaze during the press conference.
“I don’t believe that we kept only five clean sheets for the whole season. In this season, we’re going to three or four games without conceding goals.
“When you build a house, you start with a foundation, you need to lock up your defence in your system of playing. Then the forward players can get confident to score when they are in situation of scoring.
“The things that I believe we should work more on is our confidence because we get the chances, there’s no issue with the last pass or last decision-making for the pass. We just need to raise awareness in front of goals.
“We also need to be hungry to put more numbers in the box. Sometimes a player misses and the social media kills them, and it takes a lot of time to build back the confidence.
“But we need to be strong mentally as well because this is a big club.”
