Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has named his candidates for the DStv Young Player of The Season Award, admitting it is going to be one of the most hotly contested categories this season.
Khanye believes Orlando Pirates midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng (19), SuperSport United winger Shandre Campbell (18), Devin Titus at Stellenbosch FC (22) and Polokwane City and Bafana Bafana midfielder Oswin Appollis (22) have done enough so far to earn themselves nominations.
There are 14 league goals between these players so far with, Khanye giving credit to those that nurtured their gift and talent on their way to the professional ranks.
“It’s going to be a tough none [category] if we are speaking honesty,” said Khanye on iDiski TV
“Campbell did very well, also Appollis, Titus and Mofokeng. It’s going to be a difficult one. Just imagine where would the DStv Premiership be like if we took development serious in South Africa.
“Imagine if DStv clubs had developed players. Imagine if we developed players similar to these ones, take development serious at 16 and 17 year old.
“It means South Africa’s future would be rich. We wouldn’t struggle at AFCON and the way we play do you think we’d bring European coaches?
“You could take it lightly and think it is not important but Mofokeng is a sample and credit to people like Mojalefa at the School of Excellence and credit to whoever identified him at Pirates.
“I’ve seen Mabena is now getting some game-time at Sundowns and if he can go to another DStv Premiership he will be a star.”
