iDiski TV analyst Junior Khanye has joined the many voices that share sentiments about referee Skhumbuso Gasa’s officiating in the Betway Premiership match between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns at the weekend.
There were complaints from the Chiefs fan base and the technical team about Sundowns’ second goal being offside while they also bemoaned a decision that denied Edson Castillo an equalising goal late in the game. This also saw the referee ban Amakhosi’s technical IPad off the pitch while some fans threw missiles at the match officials at the end of the game.
The former Chiefs winger agrees that Sundowns’ winning goal was offside and understands the fans’ anger because their side also deserved to have one critical decision to go their way.
“I think the referee has made a big mistake especially with Sundowns’ second goal,” Khanye said on iDiski TV.
“Yes, it looked tight but that was offside let alone the one in the last minutes. Sundowns’ second goal was offside for me.
“Yes, Sundowns dominated this game, but Sundowns made mistakes even in the first goal. I mean you can’t play a high line against the speed of Kaizer Chiefs.
“For me, there was a foul [on Mosa Lebusa] but my problem is that it was offside. Another referee was going to judge it differently but for me there was a push. There was a push in those last moments, and I think that’s why Lebusa had to dive. There was a little bit of a push and if there is a push on the box it’s a foul.
“And I think the fans got angry from that Sundowns goal, the referee and his lineman made a blunder on that one and I think that’s what got the fans angry because if he allowed the Sundowns goal why didn’t he allow Kaizer Chiefs’ as well. I think 2-2 would have been a fair result,” Khanye added.
