Khune On How Chiefs Can Salvage Dismal Season

Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has urged his former side to use the Nedbank Cup final as a confidence booster to salvage what has been an inconsistent campaign.

Amakhosi have blown hot and cold over the duration of the season particularly in the Betway Premiership where they have lost 11 matches and are on the cusp of losing out on the top eight spot for the second season running.

Nasreddine Nabi’s charges are one match away from ending their decade-long trophy drought but come up against ‘Cup Kings’ and arch-rivals Orlando Pirates who have dominated this competition for the past two seasons.

‘Spiderkid’, in his conversation with iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 202 of the newspaper, advised his former colleagues to take a leaf from the likes of Stellenbosch FC who had a memorable debut campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup where they reached the semis as well as Magesi FC who won their first trophy in their debut season in top-flight football.

“The only way to salvage a season is for them to be motivated that they are still competing in the Nedbank Cup,” Khune said.

“Kaizer Chiefs should take it as a confidence booster ahead of this game [Soweto Derby]. And by them going to the final, the confidence in the league will be up, and once the confidence is up, they will move up the table.

“And once they lose or win the final they stand a chance of competing in the continental competition. Teams should be motivated now to compete in continental football, seeing what Stellies is doing. Any team can do it.

“I mean Magesi was promoted last season, they won their first trophy and Magesi is three years, four years old but already they wanted to introduce themselves to say, ‘Hey, we are now in the PSL’.

“They took the same confidence into the league where they’d been doing badly, now they are starting to pick up with, of course, the experience of coach Owen Da Gama helping them to go up the log.”
