Komphela Questions Mabasa Situation

Moroka Swallows head coach Steve Komphela has questioned why Tshegofatso Mabasa’s career has been in limbo of late.

Mabasa, 26, worked with Komphela during his time at Celtic before his form at the club earned him a lucrative move to Orlando Pirates.

Despite not being a regular at the Buccaneers, he managed to score 18 goals in 66 games before an uninspiring loan to Sekhukhune United last season saw his future thrown into doubt.

However, an impressive showing with a Golden Boot award at the recent Cosafa Cup and linking up with Komphela once more has seen his fortunes change, none more so displayed by his two exceptional goals in the 3-1 win over Cape Town Spurs on Wednesday evening.

“Tshegofatso Mabasa, the guy is talented, he’s something else, any high ball coming to him, he has hold-up play, controls the ball, brings the team closer, in and around the box,” Komphela said about the striker who netted twice against Spurs.

“At Bloemfontein Celtic when I worked with him, when he was still in the youth and he later went on to Orlando Pirates, and I’m saying ‘Tshego, what is it with you? What’s lacking?’ He lacks nothing!

“And if one were to start thinking where do you want Mabasa to go? He’s okay here, we’re so extremely lucky to have him because the next question would be should he be somewhere else, somewhere else where? Maybe abroad.

“The guy has finesse, he’s got the right attitude and he’s intelligent, he’s an intelligent person that can handle a lot of dynamics, that as well.”

Mabasa has now scored three goals in his first four league games for the Dube Birds in a budding partnership alongside Gabadinho Mhango.
