Komphela – Why I Joined Arrows

New Lamontville Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela has explained why he opted to return to the club.

Komphela was announced as Abafana Best’thende mentor past Wednesday following the side’s 1-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs in Soweto in the DStv Premiership.

But Komphela, who now is assisted by former head coach Mabhuti Khenyeza and Musa Bilankulu, immediately had an impact, collecting a 1-0 win over Polokwane City, ending the club’s 11-match losing streak.

Komphela explained that he was just sitting at home when the Arrows call came and he’s ready to help steady the Arrows ship.

“The fact that I had worked at Arrows before and I know the Chairlady has support and gives support to the coaches and they guys who I was working with,” he told journalists.

“Having looked at the technical team, it was quite realistic to say ‘relax, go in and help people who needed help’.

“Because I was not doing anything currently in all honesty. I’ll be sitting at my place, tossing and turning, going to the training and coming back.

“So for the period that you’re available you can help others and I found this as an opportunity to go help and I think it got to a place where we connected a bit with those who’ve been with me before and we connected as well a bit with those who just joined the club.

“It was more seemless, it’s not easy to get to an environment to work with people and pretend you’ve been together. so emotionally we’ve still got a long way to go.

“But we can go on, consolidate on this result and try see what more can we add to the table.”

The former Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns coach added that Arrows is an ideal project for him and he wants it to be more about others than himself.

“I think ones’ age and experience in football gives them the indication that you have a responsibility to help develop projects,” he added.

“A job is a job and we earn a salary from a job but I think even my kids are old enough that I should not feel so threatened that I’d lose my job and my kids will starve.

“The most concerning thing for any adult and any leader if you go to a stage where you say it is beyond a job, it is about others, it is about a project and a project belongs to a team.

“So you have to be a team player and what contribution you bring is very important. So I love more to be part of a project than a job.

“I can have a job and survive alone that’s selfish but in a project you help others survive too.”
