Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela says their fixture against Orlando Pirates today is like a cup final that could likely determine the title race.
Sundowns hold an 18 point lead over second placed Pirates, who have four games in hand over the reigning champions.
Meaning victory for Pirates could cut the lead into 15 points and with 12 additional points to fight for with their outstanding league fixtures, could take the race down to the wire.
However, should Sundowns overcome the Buccaneers, who have posted club record numbers in the league this season, it would be all but mathematically over.
“It’s going to be packed and the nature of the game we’re going to face for both teams, it’s a game of consequence, these are matches as you nearing the business end of the league and everything else, they are critical,” Komphela said.
“For many people, some had been saying, it’s not only a Betway Premiership match, but it is a knockout cup final match – it’s in that mixture, that whoever wins that match – hoping Sundowns come through – then we stretch the possibility of being caught by our rivals.
“If they happen to win, they narrow the gap, so it’s gonna be that tight but to me the most important is, to go back again and request our people to say, the match is 15h30, can we make it a point to get there on time.”
The two sides meet at FNB Stadium this afternoon at 15h30.
