Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana striker Zakhele Lepasa has discussed the pros and cons of moving to Europe.
Lepasa, 26, has been included in Hugo Broos’ final 23-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, despite scoring his last goal for Pirates in September.
The pacy forward started the 2023/24 like a house on fire, netting 10 goals in his first eight games for the Buccaneers, but he’s somewhat slowed down.
He also scored important goals in Bafana’s qualification campaign for the Africa Cup of Nations and has netted three times in seven appearances overall.
In a Q&A with Puma, Lepasa was asked about the pros and cons of moving to Europe.
“Everyone wants to play in Europe, as the move gives players platforms to compete at higher levels and ensure their financial security,” he said the Puma-sponsored Bafana forward.
“But there are a lot of challenges, and it requires sacrifices. For example, you are far from you family, the food is different to what one is used to, the culture is foreign, and the language is a barrier sometimes.”
Lepasa also insisted that the biggest strength of the current Bafana team is the good morale among the players.
“The team morale is high,” he added.
“We have one goal, and every player has something to prove. We haven’t achieved a lot with the national team, so this is the opportunity to make a name for ourselves.”
The 26-year-old also revealed which boots he currently plays in.
“PUMA Ultra which are designed for attacking players,” he replied.
“They are light, comfortable and great for quick changes of direction and acceleration.”
