Former Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila has named his surprise pick for the Betway Premiership Coach of the Season, naming the former Richards Bay duo of Ronnie Gabriel and Sboniso Gumede as those who have impressed him most.
The two were in charge at the KwaZulu-Natal-based outfit last season leading the side to an 11th position finish in the league.
Gabriel has since been announced as the Natal Rich Boys’ sole head coach for the upcoming campaign, his first appointment in the hot seat in topflight.
The PSL has meanwhile announced the official candidates for the Coach of the Season accolade, the league title and treble-winning Abdeslam Ouaddou, Miguel Cardoso of Mamelodi Sundowns and the former pair of Kaizer Chiefs Ben Khalil Youssef and Cedric Kaze.
Mammila spoke to iDiski Times journalist Lethabo Kganyago in edition 262 of the newspaper saying it was expected for the Orlando Pirates and Sundowns coaches to do well. However, feels Gabriel and Gumede deserve a nod for what they have been able to do with a young team.
“In my opinion, I’ll say the coach of Sundowns, yes, he won the Champions League, because of the quality that he has,” Mammila told iDiski Times.
“It’s a given he had to do it. Coach of Pirates, the quality that he has, yes, he had to do it. But give it to Richards Bay’s coaches playing with the youngest team.
“I’m sure it’s the youngest team in the country and not fighting relegation. Give it to those young guys because I think they’ve managed to give the top three teams a run for their money.
“Give it to those gentlemen because they were playing with players that are under the age of 23, maybe six, seven at a go. So, give it to those guys.”
