Manqoba Mngqithi has hit back at the criticism he faced on his playing style in his stint as Mamelodi Sundowns head coach saying people twisted what he was doing for their own benefit.
The Golden Arrows coach admits that there was some transformation he introduced in the side after Rulani Mokwena left and it was more about the Brazilians playing direct football to create more goal scoring chances. He told IDiski Times senior writer Matshelane Mamabolo in edition 196 of the newspaper he was not even troubled any of these claims.
“People wanted to create that I wanted to play on the second ball,” Mngqithi told iDiski Times.
“You are talking hogwash’ because I’ve been a fan of good football from childhood and I’ve never coached a team that plays long balls and with directness. I’ve never been that coach. But I am a coach who wants verticality”.
“I am a coach who wants a game of football to be played with an intention to score. I want my teams to play attacking football and have the ability to defend and be quick enough to regain possession; quick enough possession to exploit possibilities after winning possession because that’s where the games are normally won or lost.”
Mngqithi went to say that he knows there’s outside influence of people who are sent to distract and called their claims hogwash.
“No man, I also know institutionally in South Africa we’ve got a lot of mercenaries, a lot of people that are driven by money to ask questions and proclaim things that they are not even sure of because they are trying to serve the master” the 53 year old added.
“I never feel perturbed when I see people creating their own narrative because this narrative of change at Sundowns was all hogwash.”
