Mngqithi Addresses Technical Team Situation At Downs

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi clarified goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson’s positioning on their bench, saying he has always played the role of an assistant coach because he holds the same qualifications as all of them.

Robinson is one of Sundowns’ longest-serving technical team members having been in their dugout since 2012. He served under the late Johan Neeskens, Pitso Mosimane, Rulani Mokoena and now Mngqithi.

When quizzed why Robinson had taken up Romain Folz’ position on the Sundowns bench this past weekend, Mngqithi explained that there was a gap, and that having Robinson alongside them was not strange because of the qualifications he holds.

“He’s always been an assistant coach, but he’s also a goalkeeper coach,” Mngqithi said of Robinson.

“But he’s always been. Remember that this time around we did not have Romain Folz on the bench because he’s doing his coaching course.

“So, in terms of the number of people you can have on the bench, now we had a gap to add another one on the bench because normally Kennedy [Mweene] is not on the bench.

“So, because Romain is not there, I think it was just a natural movement but for him being an assistant coach, he’s always played that role.

“From Coach Pitso’s time, we always together and discussing everything and he’s a qualified coach by the way. It’s not that we’re trying to push him. He has the same qualifications as all of us.”
