Mokwena Reveals Sundowns January Transfer Window Plans

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has outlined their transfer plans for the January window.

Mokwena, who was recently appointed as sole head coach of the club, with former co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi redeployed as the ‘senior coach’ and Steve Komphela promoted as an assistant coach has been vocal about seeking change during his tenure.

The highly rated tactician stated he’s in the process of tweaking his technical team to suit what he feels he needs for success at Masandawana and while he confirmed there will be transfer activity, he suggested there will be more ins than outs next month.

“We always have a responsibility, we are very happy with the team that we have, we will sit with some of the players,” Mokwena said.

“Some players… always during the transfer window, there are players that want to play more and it’s only normal – and maybe some will be going on loan.”

The Brazilians had an impressive off-season in the market with six new signings, Marcello Allende, Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Bongani Zungu, Terrence Mashego, Sipho Mbule and Ronwen Williams.

But with Mokwena known for his history with youth, a subtle transformation is promised, as their academy and DStv Diski Challenge talents are likely to earn loan moves in order to gain more first team experience.

The rise of Cassius Mailulila has undoubtedly restored hope to the prospects emerging within the club and Mokwena is not looking to block their pathways into professional football.

“We might also send some youngsters on loan that we had in the camp in Polokwane that have incredible futures and we might maybe think they it’s better for them to gain match experience somewhere else,” he continued.

“So to expect no activity from us… will be me lying to you. But anything that I can say now, even prior to the window being open is mere speculation, so let’s discuss that once we get to January but we are very happy with the team we have – we are very happy with the players we have. But I don’t expect big movements, no.”
