Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs striker Katlego Mphela says the difference between Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in the title race is depth.
The two sides lie in first and second place respectively on the Betway Premiership table however the defending champions enjoy an 18-point lead at the summit with 58 points from 22 matches while Pirates have four games in hand.
‘Killer’ spoke to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 195 of the newspaper about the title race, revealing that he is one of those who believe that the race is done despite the mathematical shot Pirates has, pointing out the depth in the Brazilians’ attacking departments especially.
“I think the main thing was that them and Sundowns were all playing in the inter-club competition, the CAF Champions League, and Sundowns had more depth in their squad and quality,” Mphela told iDiski Times.
“They can play each and every three days and still perform at the same level. Yes, you can see that they are tired, but they still get results. With Pirates, they only have I think 11 to 14 players that they rely on, and it took a toll on them, the fatigue and stuff and the loss of form as well.

“I think the guys lost confidence along the way and also the [Monnapule] Saleng saga is not helping. I think it can destroy the players, can destroy the technical team, if such things come out in the media. And you’re dealing with young boys here who are not experienced enough to handle such situations.
“So, I think the depth of the two teams is the big difference between Sundowns and Pirates.”
