Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has heaped praise on goalkeeper Sipho Chaine on the occasion of him setting a new PSL record of 19 clean sheets.

Chaine, 29, kept a clean sheet in his side’s 3-0 victory over relegation-threatened Magesi FC in the league at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, his 19th this season.

Not only is he leading the pack in terms of clean sheets, he also surpassed Ronwen Williams’ record of most clean sheets in a single season, also breaking a club record after overtaking the great Moeneeb Josephs.

The South African international has also conceded just 12 goals in 28 league appearances this campaign. The clean sheet in Limpopo’s capital also meant his side stayed in contention for the league title after closing the gap with top placed Mamelodi Sundowns to just three points with a game in hand.

Ouaddou expressed his pride in Chaine calling him one of the best on the continent and one of the reliable captains on the field.

“I’m very proud of him,” said Ouaddou.

“Very proud of him. Sipho is one of the best goalkeepers in Africa, not only in the country with [Ronwen] Williams, with the goalkeeper of Kaizer Chiefs [Brandon] Peterson.

“Really, they are great, great goalkeepers. For us he helps a lot our team. You can see that he has a lot of experience. He talks to his teammates. I think he’s one of our captains on the pitch.

“You know, it’s very important for a coach to have somebody that you can rely on in the defence. And I give him credit.”

“But I give credit as well to all the team, you know, because our team, everybody is working to keep this clean sheet.”
