Orlando Pirates eased to a 5-0 win over Golden Arrows with a convincing performance to keep the pressure on leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership title race.
It was as one-sided a fixture you will see all season with the home side dominant from the first to last whistle – with Relebohile Mofokeng the star of the show under the lights at eSgodini.
He opened the scoring with a stunner from outside the area, into the top corner of an outstretched Edward Maova – and it was a sign of things to comer as the home side had four shots on target inside the opening four minutes.
Oswin Appollis made it 2-0 with a stunner from outside the area on the half-hour mark before Masindi Nemtajela forced an own-goal from Maova just before the break.
It’s been coming game in game out for the title-chasing Buccaneers with over 20 attempts at goal in each of their last four league games as they looked to ensure goal-difference doesn’t become an issue should they still be race with Sundowns come end of the season.
And despite the blip, having drawn 1-1 with Siwelele the this very ground a few weeks ago, the response has been emphatic, starting with the 6-0 away win over TS Galaxy in Mbombela – followed up with the rout over Arrows this evening.
Mofokeng – who has put his hand up as a serious contendor for the Premier Soccer League Footballer of the Season, has been in immense form since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations with nine goals and three assists in 11 games.
His second of the evening was sublime – a solo effort, finished off with a nonchalant piass into the net – leaving those in attendance at the Amstel Arena in awe. Appollis put the cherry on top, scoring a rebound after Andre De Jong hit the post in the 93rd minute.
But despite the 11 goals in two games – Sundowns still lead the Buccaneers by two points, having beaten Durban City 1-0 this evening.
