Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro’s exit could be on a historic high, much like Ruud Krol, according to one of the players during that generation, Dikgang Mabalane.
Krol departed Pirates after winning the MTN8, Telkom Knockout and league title in his final campaign, while Riveiro is on course for the Nedbank Cup, CAF Champions League and the MTN8 already secured.

It’s a major outside chance for the league, with a collapse needed from Mamelodi Sundowns, but the similarities between the exits could be similar, the former player under Krol suggested.
“I wish I knew the reason for that [his exit], strange enough, we also in my era, we won the treble, and Krol left when he was on a high, and the same [could] happen with Riveiro, it could make things interesting,” Mabalane said at the SuperSportBet media event.
“I’m not sure the real reason for it, but maybe something out of his control. But yeah, he has done well for the club, I think sometimes it’s better leaving on a high, but I would have wanted to see him carry on with the club.
“Maybe leading them also to a league title, he seemed to be the man to do it, I think whoever comes in, undoubtedly, would be the mandate for the new coach coming in.”
Riveiro has won five trophies since his appointment as Pirates coach three years ago.
