Riveiro Makes Revelation Over Marou

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro says Souaibou Marou has been a victim of his system only accommodating one striker but is impressed by his ability.

The 23-year-old joined Pirates at the back of a Golden Boot-winning campaign in the Cameroon Ligue 1 and was part of the Indomitable Lions 2022 FIFA World Cup squad.

Much was expected of the lanky striker but he’s yet to score in only eight brief appearances since his arrival from CotonSport.

“He’s another case of having many players in the same position and playing with one striker, the possibilities for them to show their capacity on TV and not during the week in training is limited,” Riveiro said on the Cameroon international.

Marou was afforded 19 minutes against Sundowns this past weekend, his first in the 2023/24 league campaign, which Riveiro said was deserved.

It appeared he would be one of those heading out the exit door in the mid-season window.

Despite a move not materialising, the Spaniard claims he’s maintained his efforts in training to force his way into selection.

“You had the opportunity to see what type of player Marou is in a scenario like [ten men against Sundowns] this is not a minor game, so he’s got some interesting attributes and the guy is working, it’s crazy how Marou works every day.

“I’m happy he had the opportunity to play, to contribute, to help us collect a point [against Sundowns], I’m sure it’s going to be good for him for the rest of the season.”
