Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro thanked the club’s management after becoming the longest-serving coach in the club’s history, beating Ruud Krol’s record.
Riveiro is on the verge of finishing his third season at Pirates and has won five trophies since his arrival. The Spanish mentor was in charge of his 120th game as Pirates coach in their 0-0 stalemate with Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday, making him the longest-serving coach for the Buccaneers in the PSL era.
Riveiro’s 120th game didn’t come up with the result he wanted after the Buccaneers played a goalless draw against Stellenbosch at Athlone Stadium.
But his record still reads impressively, with 74 wins, 23 draws and 23 losses in comparison to Krol’s 60 wins, 38 draws and 21 defeats.
“It’s been a long run; it’s just a number, but obviously when you have a look at that number, you know how much dedication is behind, how much time and sacrifices,” Riveiro told the media.

“I’m not gonna say I’m proud of myself because I’m not doing this alone, for coaches in our position to stay in the club for the period of 120 games – I’m about to finish my third season at Pirates – it looks normal, but it’s not.
“I have to say thank you to the management of the club for being patient with me and with the coaching staff with all of us, year after year keep growing as a team, as a group and pushing this project forward.
“Probably right now, I cannot give the value of the meaning of those 120 games. Yeah, let’s go for more.”
