Riveiro Reacts To Soweto Derby Record Achievement

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has reflected on their incredible record of winning five Soweto Derbies since his arrival at the club.

After losing the first derby when taking charge of Pirates, he’s followed it up with five wins, and he admits, it’s a long time coming since a journalist sarcastically congratulated him for losing at the Calabash, where his home country, Spain, lifted the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Riveiro will also have the opportunity to break the record completely, having equalled Stuart Baxter’s five wins in this fixture, with whom he achieved it with Amakhosi.

“That’s good [to win five derbies] definitely… hopefully [more], there’s still one more to play, now there’s a target, not because of my record obviously,” he said.

“I think three years ago, after my first derby here, the first question was something like congratulations, you are the first Spanish coach to lose one game in FNB Stadium and now we’re sitting here with five victories.”

Pirates will now set their sights on another record, winning the Nedbank Cup three-peat when they take on Chiefs in another Soweto Derby next week at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
