Stellies Closing In On CT Spurs Star

Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town Spurs are in advanced talks with Stellenbosch FC over a potential deal for Ashley Cupido.

The 23-year-old has been subject to much transfer talk with fellow Mother City outfit Cape Town City said to have been tracking him at some stage, though it seems as if the lanky Bafana Bafana striker will be heading to the Cape Winelands instead.

Cupido has come through the Urban Warriors structures at Ikamva since 2020 and has netted nine goals with three assists in 38 matches across all competitions since his breakthrough at Spurs.

Last season, he finished as Spurs’ top goalscorer with seven goals in the Betway Premiership before they were condemned to the Motsepe Foundation Championship relegation, and the season before was the Golden Boot winner having netted an impressive 15 goals while they were campaigning in the first tier.

The Cape Town-born marksman was part of the Urban Warriors team that played to a 0-0 stalemate against the University Of Pretoria this past weekend at Tuks Stadium.

Information received this morning by iDiski Times states that negotiations between Spurs and Stellenbosch are at an advanced stage, though it’s believed there are some crucial points that could hinder the deal being concluded.

Stellies has identified Cupido as the perfect replacement for Iqraam Rayners after he left the club for Mamelodi Sundowns. The Cape Winelands outfit have also lost Deano Van Rooyen to Orlando Pirates and recently Antonio Van Wyk to the Austrian side SV Ried.

He is the second player to leave Spurs in this window transfer after Rushwin Dortley who joined Kaizer Chiefs a month ago.
